There are some airlines like Singapore Airlines, Air Asia, Malaysian Airlines etc basically routed through Singapore and Malaysia that are a bit strict for 6 months passport validity which is in compliance with ICAO guidelines. If you are going through Air India or via Bangkok, Hong Kong there should not be any issue as what we have seen in the past- the Indian immigration does not create any issue so long as the passport is valid(even less than six months). So basically in your case (Since passport is valid for less than six months) we can advise you not to travel through Singapore, Malaysia. Now while coming back to Australia, Australian immigration does not have any issue with less than six month validity so long as you have a valid visa/PR. It is always recommended to renew your passport to avoid any inconvenience at the time of traveling.
Your passport is due for renewal before the year from expiry date. For renewing before one year should have valid reasons like- passport pages are full or damage or change in name, photo, signature etc.
If you don’t have any such reason then it may not be accepted as renewal if it is valid for more than one year.
